Start your own online business

We do live in exciting times people. At no point in history has it been easier to start  and grow a business than right now, and there is no limit to who can become a successful entrepreneur. In fact, you don’t even need a college degree or tons of cash in the bank to make it happen.

In short, within a very reasonable reach you now have the possibility to truly create your own future, with full control of your own time and the option to scale your business to almost limitless income levels. No more micro management from an employer, you are the boss!

From affiliate marketing to e-commerce, the possibilities are endless. However, because many people have already jumped on the online entrepreneur bandwagon, you need to set yourself apart from your competition. To do so, you need a strong business plan and the determination to see it through. And patience. There are quite a few “get rich quick” scams out there, so just be aware that…well, they all suck. It is simply highly unlikely you’ll be rich and successful within a week. I mean let’s keep it real here, it’s about building a business after all…

Starting an online business is really no different than aquiring any other skill, it takes the usual determination, patience and willingness to commit. Kind of like learning to play the guitar or going to the gym to loose weight or build muscle. Something we’re all capable of doing.

So let’s move along and take a look at some of the options. Below are three ways for you to quit the rat race and create the life you want.

Sell on Amazon

One question that is often asked in regard to living a laptop lifestyle is how to sell products on Amazon. There are a lot of posts on the web that tell you how to do that, but for a first-timer it can be confusing. Before we go into detail, let’s tackle the elephant in the room.

What is Amazon? Amazon is the biggest retailer on the internet and you’re able to put your products for sale on it. Once listed for sale, your products will be seen by millions of customers. In return, Amazon will take out a small fee.

Seeing how the internet has become a staple of life, using Amazon for e-commerce purposes is one of the easiest ways to live the laptop lifestyle. Just sit back, relax and watch as you continually make profits. In order to use Amazon you’ll need to put the effort in managing your finances and inventory. The key to success is finding the right products for the right price, and avoiding purchasing too much of it. Sound complicated? Easy now, there are courses available for these types of skills, which are far more comprehensible than any college degree out there.

Affilliate Marketing

A lot of people these days are turning to affilliate marketing to make money on the side. While it’s absolutely true you can create the life you want with affiliate marketing, it’s your responsibility to learn the tricks to make it work. You may be wondering “what is Affilliate marketing?” Basically, affiliate marketing is when someone earns a profit by promoting other people’s companies or products. No need to sell anything, or create anything new. Just find products or companies you really like. Keep in mind that this works best if you are passionate about the products you promote, as it entails writing ads and providing valuable information.

Many professional affiliate marketers are going to tell you that in order to succeed, you’ll have to keep adjusting it until it works. As soon as you find the right combination, you’ll have very little to do afterward. However, that doesn’t mean affilliate marketing is without responsibility. You’ll still need to create ads and provide content on your website that is relevant to the actual product or business.

Remember to choose ads that go together with your niche or you might end up losing traffic. To make matters worse, you could be penalized by Google or other search engines. To succeed in affilliate marketing, you need to clearly understand the inner workings. Crazy difficult? Not really, but as already noted above, be prepared to sacrifice some of your precious time to get the hang of things. Patience is a virtue, right?

Become a Freelancer

One of the most common ways to create a business online is becoming a freelancer. Before living a laptop lifestyle as a freelancer, you need to do your homework. Whatever skills you’re bringing to the table, make sure you put your money where your mouth is. Adding value is absolutely key.

Here’s some real advice on how you can properly make money with freelancing:

Find Your Niche

To create the life you want, the first thing you need to do if you’re looking to make more money freelancing, is to stop being a jack of all trades. Instead, find something you specialize in. It can be writing, editing or designing, or any other skill you might have that you can sell. Regardless of your specialty, once you narrow yourself down to a selected audience, you’ll start to see a lot more money coming in. In addition, regardless of your skill set, you can easily combine those skills with affilliate marketing to rake in more money. It doesn’t exactly hurt if you know how to create traffic to your website…

Know Your Worth

As a freelancer, you need to know your worth. Working for pennies on the dollar only leads to failure. Regardless of niche, you need to charge a fair rate, which allows you to turn a profit and keep clients coming back for more.

Avoid the Job Boards

In the past, freelancers had to rely on job boards to have a stable income. You would think that with job boards, there’d be a lot of opportunities. However, with so many people wanting to leave their regular jobs, most job boards are flooded with like-minded people trying to find work. Sadly, most job board listings ask for a lot of work with minimal payout.

Now I’m not saying all job boards are bad. Some are pretty good, if you can find reputable ones. Places like Upwork and Fiverr are reputable, but the competition is fierce. Living a laptop lifestyle means learning how and where to market yourself to score clients.

All in all, being a freelancer comes with many benefits, but it also has its fair share of problems and risks. Freelancing is not for everyone, so you should really think about if this is the best way to create the life you want.

Final Thoughts

I know what you might be thinking. All of these proposals include building your own website, and since your’re not a computer geek with an absolute passion for the intricate world of website building, you’re now facing an insurmountable obstacle. Right?

Well, you can throw that excuse aside, and just rejoice at the fact that there are numerous platforms available with easy to use templates, like WordPress, Squarespace etc. No technical skills required!

In a perfect world, trying to create the lifestyle you want is easy as pie. But…the world isn’t exactly perfect. You probably already have a busy life going on, with jobs, mortgages, student loans, kids etc. How will it all fit in?

Whether you choose affilliate marketing or any of the other models, know that it’s still work. However, don’t get discouraged. Allow me to repeat that: Do not get discouraged! It is work that can easily be done little at a time, we’re talking no more than 6-7 hours a week. Not all that much really, and even though it may take you 6 months, or a full year to get the results you want, just know that this time will pass anyway. You might as well make it count.

There are many ways to help you live the laptop lifestyle. Regardless of how you go about it, it’s up to you to make it happen. Hopefully, by now, the whole process is properly illuminated, and easier for you to see. Now it’s really only down to one thing….will you make that decision for yourself?
